HYPERION’S CHRONOS KEEP

When I read Hyperion by Dan Simmons a year ago, I was fascinated by the world he had created. So I am happy to show you the result of my bachelor project in which I created Chronos Keep and its surroundings, Colonel Fedmahn Kassad and the Consul's ship.

During the project I tried to follow the crucial steps like reference gathering, sketching and variations, turnarounds, callouts and only then started to work in 3D. Applying this workflow helped me understand its benefits. I had gotten stuck in 3D in the past, and only now do I understand that I lacked the knowledge of the subject I wanted to create and should have taken a step back, gathered more references and sketched my ideas on paper first.

All in all I am happy with how the images turned out, although my character creation skills are still lacking. But something I can work on 😊

THE PROCESS

After sketching and designing the assets, I started modeling in Blender. Most of the props were modeled by myself. The cliffs, rocks and statues are assets from Polycam, the textures are from textures.com. The character was created using the HumanGen addon for Blender.

The video shows excerpts from the work process.
